Proprietary Data + Broad Experience = m.Research

Over the past decade, proprietary data, backed up by deep experience, has been a major hallmark of my work in the HR technology space. I’ve had the opportunity to survey thousands of companies and tens of thousands of HR and business leaders to better understand: (1) the challenges they face; (2) the tools and strategies they use; and (3) how their HR practices impact business results. I think my success during this period is because I’ve been able to blend the quantitative survey data gathered together with my own experience and understanding, as well as that gleaned from in-depth conversations with our survey participants, to uncover the qualitative context.

Over the past several months, m.Research has conducted two major surveys: the 2019 HR Impact Study and the 2019 Workforce Management Study. The first focused on the overall impact of HCM on organizations in 2019, and the second took a deep dive into core HR and workforce management tools and technology. The infographic you see here (click here to download the entire infographic) shares some of our key findings from the 2019 HR Impact study, and hopefully gives you a better idea of the research I do, and how it informs all my writing, advisory, and speaking work.

The 2019 HR Impact Study looked at a wide range of topics, including

  • HR technology investment priorities
  • The continued evolution of payroll
  • Adoption of on-demand pay solutions
  • Marketplace perception of innovation in public vs. private companies

I love data and always want my ideas to be grounded in reality. I gather survey data on a regular basis to ensure that my insights are up-to-date and my assumptions are continually challenged.  By combining both data and my broad experience, I hope to get as close as I can to the realities of today as I work with both HR technology users and solution providers to deliver results.

I hope you also find this data important. I’ll continue to share data from our other studies (including the 2019 Workforce Management Study) in this and other formats in the coming months. I’d love to hear your thoughts on it, as well as any suggestions about what I should survey next year. Leave your comments below, or reach out to me directly. More data to come!

Artificial Intelligence and Inclusion

AI is big business, and is clearly here to stay. But as with all technology, the old saying holds true: garbage in, garbage out. If data models only include certain groups as outliers—or those deviating from the “norm” and therefore not considered—can we trust the decisions they make?

Who Do You Trust?

There’s a lot of conversation today about the role of influence and influencers in the HR influencer space as well asand the HR Tech influencer space. It’s far from a new conversation, yet it’s one that reappears more frequently now with the advent of new lists like the [fantastic] Most Inclusive HR Influencers List, and the [baffling] new SHRM 2020 Conference Blogger Rules. These influencer discussions can be useful, and maybe it’s sour grapes, but I’ve always lived my professional life by a few key rules of my own when it comes to influence.
